Título
LIFE HABITS AND SLEEP HYGIENE OF POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS
Introdução
Impaired sleep is one of the main limitations affecting the performance of daily activities such as work, study, household tasks, and social interactions. Maintaining adequate lifestyle and sleep habits promotes improvements in sleep patterns and overall well-being.
Objetivo
To analyze the association between lifestyle and sleep habits and the sleep hygiene of postgraduate students at a Federal University.
Métodos
This quasi-experimental, before-and-after research study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under CAEE 66359622.6.0000.5346 and conducted with postgraduate students at a federal university in Rio Grande do Sul. Inclusion criteria: Being between 18 and 59 years of age and regularly enrolled in a master's or doctoral program. Exclusion criteria: Being on leave or absent for any reason during the data collection period. Among the instruments used for pre-intervention data collection were a questionnaire on lifestyle and sleep habits, developed by the author, and the Sleep Hygiene Index (IHS-BR). For statistical analysis, the Chi-square (χ²) or Fisher's exact test were used when applicable, with a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05).
Resultados
Fifty-three students participated in the pre-intervention phase. In the initial characterization, 68% (n = 36) presented average/good sleep hygiene. A significant association was identified between having average/good sleep hygiene and having an adequate place to rest at work (p = 0.044), drinking black coffee only during the day (p = 0.025), having no difficulty initiating sleep (p = 0.050), having no difficulty waking up (p = 0.003), not waking up feeling tired (p = 0.013), and practicing sleep hygiene habits (p = 0.034). Knowing, implementing, and maintaining healthy habits in daily life is essential for regulating sleep and promoting health. Implementing these habits takes into account individual particularities and is an ongoing process that, when consistent, generates positive effects in the medium and long term, promoting adequate sleep.
Conclusões
These results suggest the need to promote guidance on appropriate coffee consumption and actions that provide adequate resting places in the workplace, as well as guidance on sleep hygiene habits in general, since good practices are related to a healthy sleep pattern.
