Título

STUDY OF SLEEP QUALITY AND THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF OCCUPATIONS IN HEALTH COURSES STUDENTS AT A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION (HEI)

Introdução

Sleep is essential for physical and mental recovery. Sleep deprivation, common among university students, especially in health areas due to the intense workload, negatively affects learning and academic performance. In this context, the Occupational Therapy intervention focuses on the individual and has in its scope techniques such as the organization of daily life, use of assistive devices and, as an ally, cognitive-behavioral therapy aimed at better performance and occupational sleep balance for this individual.

Objetivo

To evaluate the sleep quality of students on health courses at an HEI and its implications for occupational performance, aiming to contribute to the work of occupational therapists in the area.

Métodos

This is a cross-sectional study that included students from health courses aged between 18 and over 36 from morning and evening shifts. Patients being treated for sleep disorders and/or taking medication were excluded. Data collection was carried out using the following questionnaires: Sociodemographic, Occupational Performance History Interview/Daily Activities Scale (ADLs) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The significance level used in the decision of statistical tests will be 5%.

Resultados

The sample included 261 students, the majority of whom were women (81.2%), a little more than half of the individuals (54.8%) were unemployed and the prevalent age group was 20 to 25 years old (39.5 %). Poor sleep quality was observed in 89.7% of the sample. Students reported being dissatisfied with their performance in the areas of Studies (44.4%), Leisure (33.7%) and Self-care (29.1%). Therefore, it shows a prevalence of students classified as poor sleepers, directly influencing the poor performance of their occupations, among these, the study proved to be the most affected area. This phenomenon can be explained by the importance of good quality sleep for maintaining physical and cognitive functions, essential for consolidating learning.

Conclusões

It is concluded, therefore, that poor sleep quality directly impacts the occupational performance of students. Better management of this occupation is necessary, as well as encouraging the development of new studies in the area to support interventions aimed at improving sleep quality.
